Kypreos & Associates Ltd. understands that individuals can find themselves overwhelmed by debt for various reasons, including job loss, reduced income, medical expenses, or the rising costs of raising a family. When faced with significant consumer debt, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed and think that paying off creditors is impossible. The high interest rates associated with consumer debts, along with interest charges and late fees, can seem to conspire against efforts to become debt-free. For this reason, KAL helps Canadians better understand their debt relief options, saving money while helping them eliminate their unsecured loans.

BEWARE!

The Debt Settlement Situation in Ontario.

In Ontario, more than 50 organizations offer debt settlement services. The Ontario Association of Credit Counselling Services receives over 100 complaints a month about these companies. Debt settlement companies have also been the subject of a “consumer alert” from the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC), which warns consumers to beware of “too good to be true” offers from debt reduction companies.

Debt settlement companies have also been the focus of a "consumer alert" from the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC), which warns consumers to beware of "too good to be true" offers from debt reduction companies.

These companies often claim to help settle all your credit card debt (and other unsecured debt), promising up to 70 percent savings on the total amount owed. However, they are known for:

 •             High-pressure sales tactics
•             Charging large up-front fees before taking any action
•             Describing their services in hard-to-understand contracts
•             Providing misleading information about the effects on credit reports and scores
•             Making false claims of being linked to the government

This process poses a high degree of risk for consumers, who may be vulnerable to abuse by companies interested only in collecting up-front fees while leaving consumers to deal with disgruntled creditors. Most creditors are not willing to wait years to accept a pennies-on-the-dollar settlement.

There is no magic solution to make debts disappear. Resolving debt takes time and effort, but it is achievable with the right approach and assistance.
